What to Do in Court if You are Charged With Theft
What happens when you receive a citation for shoplifting and have to appear in court? I have no clue what to wear, what to do, or what to say. What if I say the wrong thing and get in more trouble. Do I get an attorney or do I hire one. I'm 17 so am I a minor? I was charged as an adult if that helps. What would jude say? How will I appear to the jury? Will there be a jury? I honestly really confused on what will happen.

What state are we talking about? It makes a difference.
You should dress nicely. Think about what you'd wear to church.
In many states (one of the reasons we ask), you MUST bring a parent with you if you are a minor EVEN IF CHARGED AS AN ADULT.
Can't answer further without knowing where you're appearing.

This advice probably needs updating, I know I use it all the time. Having seen what some people wear to church these days (at least in non-denom or Protestant churches, no experience with Catholic), perhaps "what your parents/grandparents would wear to church" would be more appropriate.

If it's the civil citation for $100 theft, you just pay your fine. Otherwise, I'd advise an attorney
