Can a Parent Stop a Teenager from Moving Out
My girlfriend is 17 we live in GA. She turns 18 in october and she wants to get out of a bad situation she is in living with her family. Well her mom told her not to get any ideas that she isnt moving out until she graduates and that she would make sure of that but she turns 18 in october. Is there any reason her mom could actually stop her from moving out at 18? Like. Would she be able to stop her because she is still in school or is she just talking at this point?

    Taxing Matters
    Re: Legal Age
At 18 she can move out if she wants. Her mother cannot force her to stay. But on the other hand, her parents will no longer be obligated to help her in any way, either. So if she leaves home, she should be prepared to make it on her own without family support.

Once she turns 18, she can go wherever she wants to go. So she may as well just wait another two months.

Until she's legally an adult, her mother controls where she lives and what she does. You might want to keep your nose out of this before you get dragged into something you don't want to b involved in.

If she is being abused, she needs to report it. If you know she's being abused, tell a teacher, counselor or the police.

You misread the original question. The girl wants to move out at 18. Her mother is telling her that she cannot move out until she graduates from high school...presumably next May or June.

There are a few states where the child is not emancipated until they graduate from high school, even if they are 18. However, Georgia is not one of those states.
