Court Appearance for a First Time Shoplifting Citation
My question involves court procedures for the state of: Minnesota. I recently made the mistake of trying to swipe a bracelet during a game of truth or dare that got taken too far, i received a citation and was told to call and set up a court appearance. My question is, If i am just wanting to plead guilty and pay my fine do i need a lawyer or attorney as i am 18 and financially is doesn't seem likely. I admitted fully that i was guilty of the deed and don't see any reason to argue a case that i admitted to i would just like to see the thing done. Please somebody help me i really don't know what to do and i am scared.

Do not plead other than not guilty unless you have counsel as to the implications of doing otherwise.

What makes you think you're just going to get a fine. You plead guilty, you will be found guilty, you could get up to 90 days in jail. You will also have a crimnal record that will stick with you possibly forever. Your best bet would be to get into a diversion program.

If you are indigent and can not afford an attorney, then ask for a public defender.
