If You Ignore a Shoplifting Fine Will You Be Criminally Charged
My question involves criminal law for the state of: California
Hi. I am a minor, and I made the mistake of attempting to shoplift at Khol's. They made me fill out a few forms, sign a 1 year ban, but never got pictures of me, fingerprints, or my SSN. They said there is a $275 fine I need to pay, or else they will get a warrant. My friend says I can ignore the fine and I will be fine. Is this true?
Re: I Made the Mistake of Trying to Shoplift
Are you willing to risk your college education and your whole future on your friend's assessment?

The store should not tell you that if you pay a civil demand they won't prosecute you. The civil demand is independent of a criminal charge.
Nobody here can promise that you won't be charged if you pay the civil demand, or that you will be prosecuted if you do not. You can keep rolling the dice -- it's your life and your future.

I plan on paying it, as my parents are having me work for the money. It's part of my punishment, which I think is fair. I was just wondering if they can issue a warrant or not.

No. There was no mistake. You made a deliberate choice and acted on that choice. That is not a mistake, you did exactly what you intended to do. The only “mistake” that you made was getting caught.

There is a pretty good chance that you “friend” has no idea what he/she is talking about. What the people from Khol’s are probably referring to is a civil demand. Yes, you can ignore it and, yes, YOU will be “fine.”…at least as far as legal consequences. YOUR PARENTS, however, could feel some negative impact from not paying. Yes, your parents are going to find out. As you are a juvenile, THEY are responsible for any civil demands your choices and actions bring about.

Yes I made a choice. The choice I made was a mistake. It was stupid. That's what I meant.
