It is asked for and it is required that you enter it. Read the instructions and warnings.

If you cannot figure out how to honestly answer the DS-160, you should not try to come to the US to study.

As it is, based on your posting, you deserve to be denied.

OP is looking for approval from the forum to lie on his immigration form. It shows a lack of character - especially given the warnings relating to entering info on the form.

Universities have a serious problems with honesty. A prospective student who will lie to get into the country is unlikely to worry about being dishonest once enrolled.

You are jumping to a conclusion that is not supported by the post. Logically one cannot infer that the OP is for a fact looking for for approval to lie. The OP wants to know if an ITIN that was obtained but never used for any purpose is required to be provided. It is a fair question. I think the post can be interpreted to then ask if the ITIN is not required in that situation is it better to provide it anyway or leave it off? Sure, one possibility might be that OP is looking to lie, but based on the post it is hardly the only possibility or even necessarily the most likely one.

Its also possible that the ITIN number is no longer any good. The IRS has started requiring ITIN numbers to be renewed.
