    Voluntarily Giving Up Rights
I have a problem. My friend was just contacted by a woman whom it had a one night stand with last year and she told him that she had a baby and it is his. Not only that she put his name on the birth certificate without him being present. He lives in California, I know that it is illegal to do this but now what does do. He does not want the child, that he never knew about. He is going to do a paternity test, but if the child is his he wants to give up his rights voluntarily. How does he do this?

The primary way: consent to adoption, assuming that's an available option.

You can't just voluntarily give up rights/responsibilities towards a child. As aaron said, the only way that is possible is if the mother of the child remarries and her future husband adopts the child. Then the bio-dad can sign over all rights.

It's a shame he feels this way, even though the circumstances of this child coming into the world were so unplanned. The child is innocent in all of this and deserves all of the support and love he or she can get.
