Educational Neglect of a Home Schooled Child
My question involves child abuse or neglect in the State of: Washington. This is now in the past, 20 years ago. I was taken out of school by my mom and step father and as soon as I was just old enough they would send me door to door making me sell things to people in neighborhoods making me say I was collecting money for a needy family. But when I got older it got worse. At 14 they had me hand delivering two paperboy routes every single day then from 10:30 pm to 6:30 am I would help my step father deliver the Seattle PI paper route in the car (which they put under my mother's name because my step father was collecting disability at the time and legally wasn't supposed to be working). In the extra time we had they took me out and had me deliver the weekly neighborhood free newspapers to make side money as well. I personally, at 14 made 1,200 a month back in '95 with just the two paperboy routes. However my parents only let me have $20 a month for my hard work while they went out to restaurants daily, bought 1,200 component radios, large screen tv's, Apple computers, a new car, AOL when it was by the minute, a cell phone when no one had cell phones....etc. Meanwhile, I had no time to do any school work like any normal child should, yet I got yelled at by my mother for not having the attention span to complete all my school work. Sure, I'm not the only one with a sucky childhood, but is there any way I could sue them for mistreating me? For taking my money away from me while my step father worked illegally and they took advantage of a child they pulled out of school?
Re: Homeschooled Child Used for Labor to Make Money for the Parents
When you say you were "mistreated," are you referring to how they made you work? Or, did they physically beat you?
From what I can find out, you are waaaaay beyond any statute of limitations to sue your parents even if you might be able to make a claim.
Here is one of many sites that mentions the limits:

Re: Educational Neglect of a Home Schooled Child
If your complaint is only that they made you work too hard, didn’t give you enough time for school work, and took the money you made from work, then you would not have a good claim to sue them even if the time to sue had not already expired. The law in pretty much every state is that the earnings of a child belong to his/her parents, so you would not have a good claim for them taking the money you were earning. Also, parents are allowed to have their kids work at anything the child may legally do to earn money. It sucks that all the work you did interfered with your education, but that’s a choice your parents got to make. In any event, the time you have to file a lawsuit against them has indeed long since passed anyway.
Re: Educational Neglect of a Home Schooled Child
You said you were "taken out of school" ? Do you mean you did not attend school at all.
What happened recently to make you think about suing your parents ? This was over 20 years ago. You are an adult. Grow up and move on. You have no case.
