Single Mother Caught Shoplifting
My question involves criminal law for the state of Tennessee. I shoplifted from Dillard's. Under 100 and my first offense. I am a single, unemployed mother and terrified. It's hard to afford to clothe her which is no excuse and I know enough to not say that or anything else that could be construed as an excuse to a judge. I can't afford a lawyer, should I get a public defender? I don't have anyone to watch her while i do community service and can't afford a sitter. I'm worried enough about the fines and court costs. It seems pretty stupid of me to not plead guilty, but can I get a public defender otherwise? Thank you for any advice.

What happened at the store when you were caught?
Were the police called? Did the police write you up for prosecution? Have you gotten a summons to court?
If non of that happened it's possible that the store will handle this in house and just send you a civil demand for some money.
