Can a Legal Permanent Resident Naturalize After Getting Married
If you're already a legal permanent resident through a parent and have been a LPR for slightly over three years, can you naturalize right away after marrying a U.S. citizen? How long do you have to hold a Green Card before you're eligible to naturalize?
Re: Can a Legal Permanent Resident Naturalize After Getting Married
There are two ways that you can qualify for naturalization based upon your permanent residency: You can apply for naturalization after you have been a LPR for four years and nine months, or you may petition based upon your being married to and living with a U.S. citizen spouse for at least two years and nine months.
You appear to be hoping that the shorter period that can follow marriage will apply, even though you were not married until recently. Unfortunately, that's not how things work -- and unless the marriage was a year or more ago, it appears that the soonest you will qualify for naturalization is after you have been a LPR for a total of four years and nine months.
