Will You Be Charged With Shoplifting After Stealing from Target
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Illinois.
Just to set the scene, I am a 17 year old white female and this happened on a Monday night at around 7-8. Three friends and I went to target and two of us (one of them being me) stole some things. We went around the store and picked out some items and then went to the clothes, putting things over our baskets and went into the dressing room where we put stuff in our bags. I stole 2 things of mayonnaise and mascara (I simply didn't want to pay) and bought two other things. As we were leaving and in between the two sets of doors, someone came up to my friend that stole, identified themselves as Target LP, and asked if she could return the stolen goods. She went with him and I left the store(and wasn't apprehended or asked to come inside) and I had to drive one of my friends somewhere at a certain time so I didn't come back. The fourth person stayed with the girl that got caught. As I was driving the girl to where she needed to be, the girl that got caught called me and said I had to return. I denied that I stole anything over phone and text and while I was driving my friend to her location I was told they had evidence and my license plate so if I don't come back they'll call the cops. Supposedly my friend in the "interrogation" room (didn't know what else to call it) didn't give up any of my information and kept saying I was 18 so that my parents weren't called. I drove my friend to the location and left everything in her car and was on the way back when she told me that I had to bring the items back or else the cops would be called so I had to drive back and grab the items. I was driving for probably 50 minutes so it took a while to get back to Target. The only reason I went back was because they had my license plate and my friend was still there. Also, my friend said I only needed to give back what I stole and my ID, and I wouldn't have to get out of the car. Once I got back to Target, the fourth girl that went with the one that got caught (she was waiting outside of the interrogation room because they didn't let her in) came to my car, got the stolen goods and ID, and went inside. Apparently they scanned my ID and three minutes after my friend went in with everything, they came out. The LP officer said no cops would be involved and that there will be no fees from Target. I also didn't have to sign anything since I didn't go back inside. Should I expect any legal trouble??

Who cares if you're a white female - why did you feel the need to add that into your story? Why are there so many theft posts on here? "Oh I've never done it before and I'm a good person I just made a mistake." Stop breaking the law.
YOU are the one who made it a race thing by putting your skin tone into the story. I kind of hope you get some legal trouble with your attitude.

I wasn't trying to make it a race thing by saying I'm white. If I was black, Asian, Indian, etc. I would have included it. You're making a big deal out of nothing.
I realized that breaking the law is stupid and I regret doing it because it's such a pointless crime. I just have a question that I thought should be asked. If you're not going to help me, don't bother commenting.

Well, I'm not going to disagree that you're stupid.
But yes, you did bring race into it. That you don't seem to understand that point is not our problem.

I'm not going to argue an idiot anymore because no matter what I say, you still won't get it into your head.

Actually we aren't the ones who need to get anything into our head. You are the one who does. Quite a few things. You said your friend lied and said you were 18. You realize that you were caught in that lie when you handed over your id. You seem to think you are special and you should not have consequences for being a thief. You will. It will eventually catch up to you.
Re: Will You Be Charged With Shoplifting After Stealing from Target
I only learned of that when she was let go. While she was in the room she didn't tell me anything. I'm not saying you're the one that needs to get things into your head, I just think it's pointless to argue about something that isn't relevant.
As for the consequences, I'm completely done. It was a shock that I needed and am actually grateful I had the experience.
Re: Will You Be Charged With Shoplifting After Stealing from Target
Really? You stole mayonnaise? You risked a criminal record for a condiment? I think I'm just going to color you stupid.
You may yet be prosecuted. You won't know until the statute of limitations expires. Given that there was a group of you they could even hit you with other charges. A conspiracy to deprive Target of all of their condiments! I would go after the mustard next. Yellow mustard, brown mustard, Dijon...the list is endless! And hot sauce, think of the possibilities; would each of your condiment theft ring specialize in one type? One goes after the catsup and another goes for the ketchup? Who goes after the Thousand Island? The relish thief, ketchup thief or the mayonnaise thief? The possibilities here are truly endless. Year ago some friend and I would joke about burgling houses for all of the knobs. Cabinets, door, TV (when they had knobs), ovens, lot's of knobs...but it was just joking, even though knobs seemed to disappear in our respective homes with alarming regularity and would mysteriously turn up in peculiar places like another's bathroom sink.
They have all of the evidence they need. An admission guilt, your license plate, ID. The ball is totally in their court and you have 5 years to wait for petty larceny (that's shoplifting). And you gave back the mayonnaise. The condiment gang is off to a rocky start.
