What Can You Do if Your Landlord Won't Release You from a Joint Lease
My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: New York .
I am currently living with my ex in brooklyn. We renewed our lease in Nov 2016 but realized shortly after we wanted to end our relationship. I would like to move out and she will stay in the apartment. I plan to ask my landlords to just let me off of the lease and just keep her name. Worst case scenario, if the are not willing to do that what are my options? can I draft an agreement with my ex making her solely responsible for the rent?
Re: What Can You Do if Your Landlord Won't Release You from a Joint Lease
You can draft and execute whatever agreement you and your ex- agree to enter; but it won't be binding on your landlord. If your landlord won't agree to release you, you will have to depend on your ex- to pay the rent and not damage the unit.

Another option is to offer money to your landlord and your ex so they both relieve you of your obligations.
