Assaulted by Business Owner on Its Premises
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Virginia
I was assulted by the owner of a business on it's premises. I have already filed a report with the police.
I was wondering if I could pursue any civil charges? And if so what kind of lawyer I should see? I wasn't seriously injured in the encounter, if that helps*
If someone could steer me in the right direction-I'd be greatful!
Thank you in advance!
Re: Assaulted by Business Owner on Its Premises
Your every day, garden variety, personal injury lawyer is the one to see.
Unfortunately, if you weren't seriously injured, there's not a lot of money in it for a "good" lawyer so you'll probably be relegated to the lawyers that advertise on TV who do a large volume of small claims and churn out quick settlements. And you'll give a third of the settlement to the lawyer.
On the other hand, Virginia small claims court limit is $5000 so you can sue the guy without a lawyer and see how well you do.
If you go that route I suggest you name him as an individual as well as naming his business. You can find the correct name on the Secretary of State's website where businesses are registered.

If the biggest thing that was injured was your dignity, consider small claims court.
