Does a Permanent Resident Need Advance Parole to Travel Outside of the U.S.
Does a legal permanent resident need advance parole in order to return to the U.S. if they travel to another country? What documents does a LPR need to travel internationally?
Re: Does a Permanent Resident Need Advance Parole to Travel Outside of the U.S.
A legal permanent resident (LPR) does not need advance parole for international travel. That's something that may be required for a person who is adjusting to LPR status, but is not yet a LPR. However, if the LPR will be outside of the U.S. for 180 days or longer, upon their attempt to reenter they may face scrutiny about whether or not they abandoned their LPR status, and any LPR who (a) is traveling outside of the U.S for a year or more (b) is traveling outside of the U.S. for 180 or more days during each of wo consecutive years, or (c) has been warned by CBP that the are at risk of being deemed to have abandoned their LPR status, should file Form I-131 (Application for Travel Document) to apply for a reentry permit before leaving the U.S. -- and the applicant must be in the U.S. for their biometrics appointment.
In broad terms, to reenter the U.S., the LPR should have a valid Green Card and a valid foreign passport.
