No, I'd tell him what happened exactly the way it occured, like I originally did. I just thought maybe showing concern and going there again would be beneficial and sway him to drop it...but I'll just wait and see how things pan out. Thanks for the tips.

    1) What STATE are you located in ... Because penal codes vary?

    2) Those "pillars" by the exits of the store to prevent library theft/shoplifters are called EAS

    3) Ouch this must hurt. That is why I encourage security not to stop>prosecute on the EAS alarm alone. In the library where I live in Cali the alarm goes off every f'ing minute because staff turnover is high and (usually) that means that the newbies have no idea to deactivate a EAS tag. However FYI the alarm probably rang because, although mutilated, the metallic RF/AM strip was still not broken and could still resonate waves to the EAS.

If no charges have been filed and you face no negative actions I would just let it be.

    I'm located in MA.

How immediately will I know if criminal charges have been issued?

The security head said that he'd "give me a day to think about it/come forward with any other info." To the guys who are more experienced in these matters: would you read this as an indication that he knew he didn't have sufficient evidence to charge me and was trying to pry a confession out of me? From the start he seemed like he was trying to sweet-talk me into saying I did it, claiming he needed the barcodes to make reshelving the books easier...

No one can answer that question since no one here knows the guy.

My GUESS is that this is a standard speech he gives to everyone.

Seems to work...gets you upset, etc.

Seems as though you took books that were not rightfully yours to begin with. That not withstanding, what answer are you going to give the Dean when he asks you to prove ownership?

I think the question here is NOT whether he had the books when he exited his school library (because he admitted that ... and the EAS alarm wouldn't have rang) ... the point is whether they got there by malicious intent to deprive the library of their books OR whether they honestly got there by some (plausible) mistake and/or somebody else's doing. So which is it

OK, I am NOT saying you are not lying ... but recount the your story slightly more detailed because I am sure there are critical parts (holes) being left out that could work to your favor (or against) if explained correctly ... Ive seen it happen.
