Just trying to get a job

Hey there,

This is the first time I have used this forum. I have been offered and lost several jobs recently over a failed background check. In some cases I even worked a little before they gave me the bad news. In any case, I have yet to find the exact reason why I am failing. I have a felony DWI 13 yrs ago and 2 misdemeanor assaults --- the last one occurring about 4 yrs ago. All convictions were in Texas. If the felony is causing the problem, I was wondering if it can be reduced to a misdemeanor after the fact. I'm getting pretty frustrated and considering leaving the state. I'm not sure how much that would help though.

I don't know of any way to reduce your DWI felony. Try consulting a criminal defense lawyer for an in-depth analysis of your situation.

From personal experience, although I did not have the same charges you have had, I had to wait atleast 7 years before employers stopped firing me. On most applications, and in reality, an employer will look as far back as 7-10 years, but usually its just 7 years, for a felony conviction. Both of mine were felonies, and as I said, it took 7 years before I could land a decent job w/o worrying about being fired for lying on a job application. Hence the reason I now work at home, mainly through eBay, because no one bothers me anymore. I am an honest man, I did my crime and did my time. Unfortunately, it may take a few more years before you start seeing improvement on the "job status".
