Caught Shoplifting and the Police Were Called
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Georgia

Hi, I was caught shoplifting today at Kohls and the police were called. It was only a small $15 watch however they have video evidence of me putting the watch on and off, then shopping more and then buying earrings and then leaving. I pleaded with them saying I didn't mean to take it but they didn't listen. This is my first offense shoplifting.

Now I'm just wondering what will happen because of this. My court date is in a few months, should I get a lawyer now? I'm not sure if I'll be able to afford a lawyer, will that still be okay? Will this end up on my permanent record? Will I need to complete community service or be on probation for this? If anyone has any experience with this who can help me please reply, I am currently freaking out.

Yes, you need a lawyer. This is a criminal charge. Talk to several. Most should offer free or low cost initial consultation. If you can't afford one, ask the court for a public defender. Also expect civil damages. The store can send you something called a civil demand. Whether you pay it is up to you but your credit might be affected if you don't. You may be eligible for pre-trial diversion if this is your first time. Yes it will be on your record.

You are about to find out just how much that watch is going to cost you. Stop stealing.

Use the search function here. Lots of shoplifting threads.
