Can You be Laid Off Indefinitely
A restaurant Manager in New York State was laid off from his position. Four months have passed and he hasn't been called back. Can he be laid off indefinitely?

He should treat this as a termination. If he has not done so already, he should apply for unemployment. If he has not already done so, he should seek employment elsewhere.

It sounds like, "You're laid off", was a way for the owner to soften the message, "You're fired". There's no maximum amount of time for which you can be "laid off".
