Never formally caught shoplifting/prosecuted but worried I could still get in trouble
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Virginia
So last year a friend taught me how to shoplift. We were at Target and short on money, which I know is no excuse. I guess you could say it became a nasty habit. I have done it at Target, Wal-mart and Giant. It was always small things, never anything over $30, (shampoo, lipstick, some shirts, etc.) but I did do it multiple times. Recently I almost got caught and since then I have realized the severity of my actions and am 100% never ever doing it again. I have never formally be caught or been prosecuted, a guy just followed me out of the store and asked me a few questions but let me go. I have no record not even a speeding ticket. However, I am now aware of the extensive LP departments of these large chain stores and my research has sent me spiraling into a panic attack. So my question is: how likely is it that I could be prosecuted or get in any kind of trouble now or in the future for my previous transgressions? I am worried I'm being tracked now (my vehicle, my address, etc.). I am terrified, I have repented for my mistakes and would like to move on and put this behind me.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Not likely, however until the statute of limitations runs out you can be charged with any crime you commit.

Do you have any idea or a guess how long it would take for them to take action? I've never felt like was being followed and have never been approached except for the one time. And the one time was at a store I rarely did it at.
