Do Retail Chains Use the Same Database for Shoplifters
My question involves criminal law for the state of: California
Okay, I had a momentary lapse in judgement today (or yesterday rather) and I got picked up at Kohls for shoplifting. I take full responsibility for what I did and I know what I did was stupid and wrong. It was the first and last time something like this has ever happened to me and quite frankly I feel like a damn moron because it's something that can be so easily avoided and just not even worth all the guilt I am consumed with at the current moment.
My question is, I work in retail and while I know it'd be very hard to believe I wouldn't steal from my current job (which I never have), I don't want this affecting where I currently work. It is a large retail chain like Kohls, so I was just wondering if this in any way, affect my current employment? I know it hurts the prospects of getting hired at any retail job in the future, but can people get fired if the current LP/AP see my face and name in a database that they share or something? The police weren't called or anything like that, but I know my name will get put in the NRTD or whatever it is called (information I've been reading online) because they did take my license and picture. I just am worried so much about this because I cannot afford to lose my job. It was local to the place where I currently work so I was just curious. Very nervous to be going to work tomorrow.
Any information will help. Thank you.
Re: Do Retail Chains Use the Same Database for Shoplifters
Many retailers use the NRTD. Without knowing which one you work at, and I would caution you not to say, it's hard to say if they are a member or not. That being said, AP/LP does not troll the NRTD looking for perps. Last time I checked, it's not even accessible at the store level. If something were to occur which required you to undergo a new background check at your current employer, which no circumstances come to mind at the moment to cause this, it might come up. Otherwise you should be golden on the database issue. Where you might run into an issue is if someone from Kohl's LP were to see you working. They might then mention your little lapse in judgment to your store's LP. If you told them where you work at when you were stopped, they may also pass along the information. That will, at the least, garner you some attention from them. I cannot say what HR might do if they were find out.

Thank you for your information. While I still feel like shit, maybe I'll able to sleep tonight.
