What Should a Defendant Do if They Have Fines to Pay and No Job
A young woman got into an argument with a friend and kicked the friend's car door. The door was dented, costing $700 to fix. The young woman was charged with damaging the car, and her plea has been held in abeyance, but she has to pay close to $900 in fines and court costs. She lost her job, and doesn't want to work for less money in fast food. What are her options?
Re: What Should a Defendant Do if They Have Fines and No Job
She may be able to get an extension of the deadline for payment, but here's the deal: Her plea is being held in abeyance, and if she follows through she will not have a criminal conviction. If she does not take advantage of the court's generosity, she will likely end up with a criminal conviction, and will likely incur even more costs along the way.
Sometimes, when nothing else is available, part of growing up is taking the job that you don't want in order to take care of your responsibilities.
