Filing for a Re-Entry Permit on Short Notice
A legal permanent resident needs to travel outside of the U.S., and needs to be absent from the U.S. for an extended time. She thus wants to get a re-entry permit so that she does not jeopardize her Green Card. However, she will have to travel in sixty days, which many recommend as the absolute minimum for seeking and receiving a re-entry permit. What are the consequences if she files less than sixty days before she has to travel, or if the re-entry permit is not issued before she leaves?

She may have the re-entry permit mailed to her at a location outside of the United States -- to a DHS office, embassy or consulate in another nation. However, she must be in the USCIS for her biometrics appointment in order to qualify for the re-entry permit, and if she cannot appear for her appointment her application will be denied. Unless she is prepared to travel back to the U.S. for biometrics, she should not leave until after she has filed her application and has had her biometrics taken.
