A man left his wife, who is disabled and on SSDI. He cut off all of their credit cards, and emptied the bank account, then filed for divorce. How can she get a lawyer when she is unable to afford one, or even to pay her bills?
She should start by consulting legal aid.
She may also be able to find a lawyer who is willing to take the case while seeking an advance of legal fees from the other spouse, to be credited toward the eventual settlement, or to collect fees at the conclusion of the case.
She should speak to her lawyer about payment of bills, and about getting temporary spousal support, during the pendency of the case.
If she's up to it, perhaps she can represent herself.
