Help for getting emancipated in Ontario
hi.. i'm looking for information on how to get emancipated in Ontario. I can't seem to find much information on going about to doing this.
I'm kind of in a bad situation at home.. it isn't a phase or some teenage angst thing.. things are just kinda not healthy here and i think that its the best thing to happen. If i had my way, things would be normal and i would live at home, i don't want to leave, but i'm being driven to it. Any help anyone can offer is appreciated.. thanks
Erin
Re: Help for getting emancipated in Ontario
In Ontario, you can leave parental control at 16 years of age. You might hate this suggestion, but stick it out with your parents until you are 18. If you decide to leave home, do not do so on bad terms. Don't go away angry. Make sure your parents know you are leaving and where you are going to be. Don't run off unacknowledged. If you do, they are going to call you in to the police as missing and the police are going to have to look for you to confirm you are safe and sound. It is very wasteful of limited police resources. You are taking a big step in life if you decide to pack up from home. You are making an adult decision that requires adult planning, preparation and execution. Good luck.
All the best!

Re: Help for getting emancipated in Ontario
Trust me, this isn't something i want to do. I wouldn't want to leave on bad terms. I live alone with my dad, and i love him, but i don't want to get him in trouble and i can't stay here any longer. I have a good paying job and i attend highschool, i do most of the domestic chores at home, i am sure of it that i can support myself and take care of myself and still do everything i need to do such as school and work. I am almost 17, and i'm trying my best to keep my head on steady, but i can't live at home anymore. I just need information on what i need to do this, what steps there are, anything that can help me get the ball rolling on this. I've searched government websites on family law, and googled dozens of different wording of minor emancipation but i can't seem to find much about it. It doesn't help that it's different from state to state, province to province. I don't know where to turn to. Thanks for replying Jay.

Canadian laws differ than the ones in the US.
I can only suggest you go to your local courthouse and request information on how to achieve this.
If they do not have the forms, they may know where you can get them.
You should also consider talking with your school guidance counselor as to what options you have.

jturner901 already addressed Canadian law.

Erin: There are no step, no rules, no laws as our American friends have. At 16 years old, you just walk out the front door and you are on your own. We don't use the term emancipation up here. You find a place to live, get a job or obtain student welfare and live your life. The world is your oyster.
All th best!
