Father Changing His Last Name, Wants to Change Child's
My question involves name change laws in the State of: Tennessee

My ex husband has decided to change his last name, for reasons that are unknown to me. He also wants to change our 9 yr old daughters name to match (she currently has his last name). I have had primary custody of her since we split up when she was 1. His involvement with her has been sporadic at best. I am against changing her name. She has known herself as her current name her entire life, it's her identity. All her friends, teachers, coaches know her by her current name. It would just cause stress and upheaval in her life for no good reason. I don't see that she should be required to change her name because he wants to change his. She doesn't want to change her name. Can he change her name without my permission? Can the court force her to change her name?

The court can order the name change, yes. However, in this set of circumstances, I strongly doubt that they'll approve his petition.

Has he actually filed and had you served yet?

If not, don't bother addressing it with him until you do actually get served with a suit. Blustery winds tend to rise up and dissipate very quickly.
