Can You Keep Shoplifting from Going On Your Criminal Record
I was recently caught shoplifting at Wal_ mart something stupid for about $10. I was taken to the back and the got all of my information and then the police came, I was not handcuffed or finrprinted or anything and this is the first and last time I have ever done anything like this. I havent yet gone to the court I will this week but I am wanting to know if it is likely this will go on my criminal record or if there is ANYTHING I can do to get it off. Also if I plead guyilty will I just have to pay a fine or would I have to fo community service or anything like that??? Please reply!!!

    Shoplifting Arrest
If you plead guilty, the most likely sentence is probation, a fine, and possibly community service (or something similar). A criminal record is a permanent record, unless expunged or sealed. You may wish to consult a local lawyer for a more certain assessment of your likely sentence, and to see what alternative dispositions might be available.

Hello. I am in almost the exact same situation you are. I was caught shoplifting at walmart almost 3 weeks ago ( about $12 worth) It is the worst mistake of my life. I read your post and you mentioned you are going to court this week... did the cop give you a citation on the spot? The cops were not present for me, i just dealt with the stores loss prevention. I was told i would receive a letter in the mail requesting no less than $50 & no more than $500. Did you get one of those? I am curious to know what has happened to you so far?

    HELP
ok, i was also caught shoplifting at wal-mart a few days ago. all i want to know is if this is going on my record? no cops were involved. i gave all my information to the store security, but they did not call the cops. they said that if i didn't have my ID, they would have to call the cops, but i did have it, so they didn't. does this mean that it won't be on my record? basically, if a cop were to look up my record, would this incident show up? my father is a cop, and i am just so embarassed by what happened, that i do not want him to find out! i will be able to keep him from seeing the letter in the mail, but i don't want him to be able to see it on my record if he ever happens to check up on me. does anyone have any answers?

From what you have stated, there is no police record or criminal record of the incident, but Walmart will maintain an internal store record. (I don't personally know if Walmart shares their records of shoplifting incidents with other stores; perhaps one of the loss prevention officers who visits can answer that.)

aaron, if you mean from say, Target to Wal-Mart sharing info as a rule no. Within the same company there is a good chance info will be sent to another store or can be obtained if needed by the other store. Sometimes when I worked next to majors like Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Ave, we LP's would exchange info on boosters or refunders but nothing detailed. That being addresses, phone numbers, license numbers all that is confidential and can't really be passed out.
