    Caught for Shoplifting While Enlisting in the Military
    My question involves criminal law for the state of: Oregon

    I stole from a Fred Meyers store, got Caught stealing Food and things I needed but I'm in the process of joining the us miltary was supposed To leave on the 18th and I screwed everything all up my Only chance is to still go is going my charge lowered and not get probation or jail time. I paid back the store already I just need advice on what my Next move should Be what can I do to show this isn't the person I am and help my get Shipped and start my life over and be a better person.

    You need an attorney. Even if you get your charge reduced, the military is still likely to bounce you. All the services are having to cut numbers and any reason to remove someone from the rolls could be seized on. Have you spoken to your recruiter about this?

    As free9man says, any criminal conviction is going to be a problem. Yes, the military won't take you if you're under restriction (probation or in jail), but you'll still likely need a waiver and as he says it's going to be hard to get. You've demonstrated lack of moral character necessary to serve. It IS the person you are. The military also doesn't want liars. Your best bet is that a lawyer can somehow beat these charges.

    I did talk to my
    Recruiter today, he seemed confident that I would still be able to join. But it's hard to say.
