How to Correct a Child's Name on a Birth Certificate
My question involves name change laws in the State of: Idaho.

My child is a teen and after years of correcting people her name (it's shortened to only two letters in birth certificate) she feels embarrassed having to explain why it's not right. it's an error I made in 2000. I'm not sure if I have to take this case to her birth state (California) or apply for it here in Idaho. Also is it considered a name change or correction ?

Ex: Someone's name is Ethan and birth certificate shows EN

You can do it where you are now. Its a name change.

As long as you've lived in Idaho for six weeks (this is quite gracious, many other states require six months) you can apply for the minor name change.

Information on how to accomplish it is here: http://www.idaholegalaid.org/node/22...or-name-change

If the name were misspelled as "Ethin" instead of "Ethan", that would be the type of error that can potentially be fixed by correction. Changing "EN" to "Ethan" would likely be viewed as a complete change of first name, requiring a formal name change. If the name might be eligible for correction, or to correct the California birth certificate after obtaining a name change order from a court, forms are available here.
