Unlawfully Accessing Somebody Else's Email Account
My question involves civil rights in the State of: Illinois
Well someone that I know went into my email and changed the password, and then went into my Facebook after resetting the password with my account. Then added her own personal cell phone number to the account just so she could reset the password again, after not having access. She removed my phone number from the account. And I absolutely know it was her considering she added her phone number. Is there anything I can do in terms of the legal system? I mean she went into my emails without my consent, and then deleted the emails indicating that she was in my accounts and changing the passwords. And the fact that she literally stole the accounts from me temporarily.

Do you think the answers are going to be any different a second time round?

[A case was mentioned] from 2008 in which a man hacked into his co-worker's email, hundreds of times, in the context of what was characterized as stalking behavior, and was charged with a violation of 18 U.S.C. Sec. 1030. Charges might also have been possible under 18 U.S.C. Sec. 2701. Under the facts given here, the most serious charges that could follow under either statute would be a misdemeanor. Similarly, there might be a misdemeanor offense chargeable under 720 ILCS 5/17-51.

Depending upon the full facts and what a prosecutor believes can actually be proved, it is possible that the facts could support a misdemeanor prosecution of somebody. But when the police or a prosecutor hear the context, the odds that they're going to investigate to try to determine exactly who did what, how and when, to lock the OP out of accounts he carelessly leaves accessible through devices he gives to children would be... I don't want to say 0% because there's always a chance, but it's a chance at or below the level of a rounding error.

Meanwhile, [you have] been communicating with the child over what may well be an unlawful sexual relationship, using that device, and it may be brimming with evidence that could be used to support charges against [you], as well as to support the petition for a protective order.

And no, the use of the mother's phone number does not of itself prove that she did anything.

There are other possibilities. It's possible that your girlfriend is trying to help you with your charges by setting up her mother. It's possible that you did it, or that you had somebody else make the changes upon your request, and are hoping that you can use an accusation against the mother to try to get out of the protective order or introduce doubt to your criminal case. What can you prove?

You have already been given answers. Bottomline - go ahead and report this but it likely will not go far and you will just open up to the fact you have been messing with a minor.

Just go to the FBI's website and report this.

The FBI will not bother with any local laws that you violated. And, if you have not had sex with the girl, and if you did not communicate with her after the order of protection was established, then you did not violate any local laws at all.

And the FBI will either a. ignore the report or b. tell him to talk to the local yokels. They are NOT going to get involved in a small time pissing match like this.
