I didn't mean to appear like a troller. I don't know the politically correct way of referring to the Hitler analogy.

Thank you Taxing Matters for giving me your professional legal viewpoint.

Around here it is more frequent (every 2 months, but different ones) and most of them appear to be gathering information. I was told they get credit for heaven points or something. And while I agree that our corporations hold a lot of data about each of their employees (and customers), there is the fact that as a company hiring an employee, they are explicitly given permission (by the employee when he/she agrees to work for them) and by customers who fill out feedback questionnaires, buy their product, etc.

Door knockers (religious, or otherwise) are entirely different in my opinion. But from what you have said, there is no law.

Thank you. Glad to see I picked the right forum for my question!

There should be a law against it. It's unethical, invasive, among other unpleasant things, and rude. When the police do it on the street (carding) it's one thing (Toronto), but to have them knock on your door is really bad.

Makes me think a crowd funding campaign to create a new law would resonate with people.

Please understand that this site deals with U.S. legal issues and my response dealt with law in the U.S. If you are in Canada, the law may be a bit different. While the law of both nations is rooted in old English law they nevertheless have some differences in their laws. I have not reviewed Canadian law on this.

If it's frequent unwanted visitors that irk you, you could always put a "No solicitation' sign on your door. Or even a "No solicitors and I'm a devote Atheist" sign, if you want to cover all of your bases.

Knocking on doors is a terribly inefficient way to gather intel on people and neighborhoods. It would be much more efficient for someone to go online or even to pay for the data. I know of no religious organization that gathers info on people this way.

As for religious folks knocking on the door, I offer them something to drink and talk to them for a few minutes if I have the time. I don't mind it. But, then, I'm a religious sort of folk. :)

Somebody said there isn't a law to prevent this. Well, in my state there is. It's called trespassing if I have my property marked and they enter against the warning.

I'd like to be able to accuse them of illegal profiling and quote some individual/human rights violation/law or something similar.

    How's this for an alternative.

When your doorbell rings, open the door, say "No, thanks" and shut the door.

    They go away.

That takes care of your own problem and you can bloody well mind your own business with regard to how anybody else handles the solicitation.

Yeah, well, I doubt you'd get a prosecution on it even if it would be a crime in your state.

Best way to prevent unwelcome visitors coming to your front door ... put a fence and a gate up, and LOCK the gate. Aside from that, the First Amendment covers a lot of ground when it comes to religious and political folks coming to your front door.

If it's a crime? Of course it is.

As to getting it prosecuted; maybe, maybe not.

usually saying this (with phone in hand); hold on a second. I'm calling the police right now to report your trespass since you ignored my warning sign.

that usually gets them to hightail it it of there and not come back.

Maybe. I haven't read your state's trespassing statute. Coming to your front door for a non-commercial act, or one protected by the First Amendment may not be an unlawful act that triggers the law.

I cannot imagine a prosecutor going after someone who knocked on your door asking if you wanted to read the Watchtower or talk about God.

Maybe. Though I have never thought to try it ... I'm a tad more polite with strangers.

Have you heard of a little thing called "The Constitution"? "Bill of Rights", maybe?
