How Can You Help a Teenager With a Neglectful Parent
My question involves juvenile law in the State of Minnesota. My ex boyfriends daughter currently lives with her grandfather's girlfriend. Her father has not seen, spoken or supported her since November of 2015. She has threatened to run away and even gone as far as saying she wants to just die. I know i have no legal standing because I'm not blood. Her father has full custody of her and refuses to give that up because then he will lose the help he gets from the state and he doesn't want to work. he has an extensive criminal background and was in and out of jail for the 4 years we were together and I took care of her. she has stated to the police and to even cps that she wants to be away from her father and she would like to come live with me. Because I have no rights what can I do to help her? I know she is not my daughter by blood but I'm her "mother" I want to make sure she is ok and in the situation she is in she is not ok.

No, you're not her mother. The girl is taken care of and if there is a question of abuse or neglect, CPS should be informed immediately.

Where IS Mom? I'm asking for a very specific reason.

Has Mom had her Parental Rights Terminated by the courts ? Have you talked to the CPS caseworker ? How do you know what the child told CPS ? She may need help, but you aren't iin a position to help her. If CPS believes the child is in need of services or care, they will handle it. If you're getting all of your info from the child, that is not a good place to get it. You have no legal right to the info about her or her case.

What is your relationship with Grandpa's Girlfriend? As the others have stated, you're kind of in a pickle here. Since you weren't married to dad and he didn't leave her in your care, you really don't have any rights at all. Then again, neither does Grandpa's Girlfriend! Why isn't she living with grandpa? The risk here is that if the courts are made aware that dad has abandoned his daughter (which no contact in 12 months would be) she could be placed in a foster home which could be much worse for her.

Why is she threatening to kill herself? Is she currently seeing a counselor? Is her current residence safe for her?
