Should a Shoplifter Ignore a Civil Demand Fine
My question involves criminal law for the state of: New York

I recently got caught shoplifting at Nordstrom Rack. There were no police involved, and the situation was handled by their loss prevention officers. The items I took added up to approximately 100$ and I was told the fine I will be receiving in the mail would be 4x the amount of what I stole.

Should I ignore these notices to pay? Will they really follow up to sue me?

    Please help!

It's your choice to make. If you fail to pay the civil demand, the debt can end up on your credit report. If you are a minor, they may also pursue your parents. Time will tell if you are sued.

    No.

The civil demand is in lieu of having you arrested, prosecuted, and sent to jail.

Maybe they will, maybe they won't.

Maybe they'll turn their evidence over to the police and you will be arrested, prosecuted, and sent to jail.

Look, you admitted to being a thief, so maybe you are halfway to where you need to be. How about resolving to turn your life around and settling with the company that was willing to give you a break. Your bad choices could be forgiven if you fully man up, take responsibility, apologize, and make amends. Maybe you could make them a counter offer, but I am not sure how you can sleep at night if you are considering just blowing this off.

The two aren't directly connected. It's not an either or -- and many shoplifters enjoy both.
