If You're Caught Shoplifting, Will the Store Figure Out That You've Stolen Before
My question involves criminal law for the state of: California
I am so desperate for answers. I was caught shoplifting from Target- about $100 worth of clothes. The police came and gave me a citation for petty theft. I have no criminal record at all prior to this. My concern is that I have shoplifted from this Target before... many times. I'm usually pretty good at concealing it, but I was careless this time. I know that Target is big on investigations... does anyone know if they might pull up old videos?? Has this happened to anyone else?! I know I'll get fined for this but I'm terrified they're going to launch some sort of full blown case against me... I've never felt more guilty or stupid in my life. Please help me. Maybe somebody who worked in loss prevention at target??
Re: Desperate- Shoplifting, Repeat Offense, Target
While it’s possible they’d go searching through old videos to look for other shoplifting crimes you’ve committed I think it’s unlikely. But they may well keep a sharper eye on you if you ever go back. You’ll likely be banned from at least that one store, and perhaps all of them. If you are convicted, you’ll end up not only with a fine and whatever other punishment the court hands out but also a criminal record that will make getting jobs harder. And make no mistake, if you get caught a second time jail time may well be in your future even if that doesn’t happen this time. I hope you’ll give up the theft. No one likes thieves — you help make everything more expensive for the rest of us. So don’t expect the court, prosecutor, or jury to be very sympathetic.
