Will the DMV Find a Probation Warrant When You Apply for a Driver's License
My question involves criminal law for the state of Georgia. I have a felony probation violation warrant active from around 1993. I have been living and working all over the United States and have kept my nose clean. I currently have a Pennsylvania driver's license in good standing, but I am about to move back to Augusta Georgia and I will need to change my Pennsylvania license to a Georgia license. My question is will the Georgia DMV run my name and social security number for Georgia warrants. I have every intention of hiring an attorney to handle this, but I need a Georgia license in order to go to work first. And with 6 kids depending on me, I have no time to sit in jail for something 23 years old.

Nobody can predict what WILL happen but the odds are good that it COULD happen. I'm guessing that just entering your name and info from the driver license application could automatically bring up the warrant.

I doubt that. You've let it slide for 23 years, you aren't gong to hire an attorney until you are compelled to do it from a jail cell.

Tell that to the cop that puts the cuffs on you.

Smarten up and call a lawyer in GA before you go there. Otherwise the odds are stacked against you.

If you think this is going to get taken care of simply by hiring a lawyer and you won't have to sit in jail.................

well, you just keep thinking those happy thoughts. As the saying goes; ignorance is bliss. The truth is as scary as all Hell.

OP may be hoping their case will be like some in the news lately. Person escapes/runs from their sentence and is a good egg for decades so the courts give them time served or some other slap on the wrist.

Welcome to Georgia. I live in Augusta. Asked my youngest son if a warrant check was done by Richmond County DMV when he changed his license back to Georgia when he moved back here. He said no; this was several years ago.

However; if you are stopped for ANY reason (even one of those routine law enforcement checks that are being done a couple of times a year) warrant checks will be done. This is how one of my former tenants with a warrant out for property destruction was picked up.

To clarify, the charge was felony theft. When I was much younger, I was a very troubled person with many substance abuse problems. A friend of mine came from Tulsa to Augusta Georgia and drove me back to Tulsa with him while I was passed out. I only remember waking up in Tulsa. And I turned my life around and have been clean and legal issue free since.

Upon getting my license in Pennsylvania and renewing it this past August, there were no problems. I'm just being cautious. I've already talked with an attorney who said he would be able to take care of the warrant for $1500.00. I just need to make the money first.
