just for fun lets guess that a user at facebook posts an average of 1 image per user per month. That is 1.5 billion new images every month. That's 50,000,000 images daily. that averages around 580 images a second, or about 1.73 milliseconds per image.
You were saying what about they aren't trying do it in a short time?
Facebook does not instantly make those connections, nor make all possible connections even on a monthly or yearly basis. Facebook's connections evolve over time, in ever widening circles. It is simply NOT the same thing. Facebook's connections are also not based solely on facial recognition, they are based on many other factors as well.
Bottom line...there is no way that Walmart could or even should invest in the kind of technology that would be necessary to scan every incoming customer against a database of banned people. They are far more pragmatic than that.
Example: 5 teenage girls go shopping together at Walmart. One of them attempts to shoplift. All 5 get dragged into the office and parents called. Nobody gets arrested but they all get banned for life. (standard Walmart ban) After a couple of years all 5 of them start shopping at Walmart again and nobody ever is stupid enough to shoplift again. Each of those girls spend thousand of dollars a year as adults in groceries and other products. What is more in Walmart's best interest?...keeping them banned and losing that business, (and possibly the business of their parents) or bringing the hammer seriously down if one of them does it again?
Fiscally, Walmart's best interest are far better served in catching shoplifters at the moment and bringing the hammer seriously down on repeat offenders than in maintaining a database of banned persons and ensuring that they never enter the stores again. Fiscally its a no brainer and Walmart is NOT fiscally irresponsible.
