How to Register a Car Without the Co-Owner's Cooperation
My question involves vehicle registration or title in the state of: MI
My car registration is on my ex girlfriend name and my name. How to get the registration done on my name. I have the car with me. What do I need from my ex? The car is currently registered in the state of VA and need to be registered in MI now.

You'll need her cooperation at least to sign the Virginia title over to you.

Don't count on your ex signing over the title if there is still a loan balance. She'd remain obligated on the loan without ownership interest.
Even if there wasn't a loan on the car I imagine she'd want to be paid for her signature. Be prepared for that.
The alternative is to see if Michigan DMV will allow you to post a defective title bond.
Here's the statute 257.217 (1) (d):

Re: How to Register a Car Without the Co-Owner's Cooperation
depending on how cooperative she is;
she can remain a co-owner if she desires. The VA title can be converted to a MI title with both remaining as owners, if she is willing. If she doesn't care she can simply sign off of the title. Are you willing to purchase her share if she requires it?
If you have a lien on the title the lien holder will have to approve the state change or it won't happen otherwise. Even if there is a lien and the lien holder has a right to continue the lien you can convert the title to a MI title if the lien holder is agreeable. You would end up with a MI title with the current lien holder still listed as lien holder.

Good point.
I've had car loan contracts that specify that moving the car out of state is default.
OP needs to read his contract.

What is the process of signing the title? I have the title and registration with me. Does she need to be at DMV physically? or Is there any document or affidavit that she can send it to me, so that i can go ahead with new reg and title?

I think the following form might be what you are looking for but I suggest you go to the DMV personally and check out the procedure.

Re: How to Register a Car Without the Co-Owner's Cooperation
That appears to be one form that would work but I suspect mi may have a problem with the op using it to remove the other party on the title while he remains an owner. Allowing such activities would open the door for a lot of fraud. I would hope mi does not allow that form to be used simply due to the improper uses it could allow.
Ven_red, are we to take the lack of answers that there is no lien on the title and the other owner is in fact willing to relinquish her claim to the vehicle upon asking?

Yes, She is accepting to give away title and reg to me, but the only thing is she cannot come all the way from VA to MI for this, That's her concern.

And the question regarding the lien?
im not familiar with VA titles so clue me in. What has to happen if selling a car in VA?
if the sellers signature must be motorized you can mail the title to her. She can visit a notary and sign it and mail it back to you.
