Teenager Caught Shoplifting and Told to Expect a Civil Demand
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Illinois

I was caught shoplifting 1 item worth of $29.99 from my local Target. I am 16 from Chicago, IL. They took me to the locked room and asked me questions and my ID. I gave them my ID and they wrote down stuff on their computer. Is showing them my ID the same as not showing them since some people didn't have their ID and they still continued? Will they write down any important information on my ID? They made me wait for someone older than 21 (my mom) to pick me up and sign the No Trespassing paper. I didn't get any court citations but they did show me a receipt and said I had to pay that much on the receipt but when I got it in the mail, it was $250. Will they send me any thing else and also tell me to pay the $29.99 as well as the $250? What would happen if I don't pay them?

They could press charges. They could allow the amount to accumulate with interest and legal fees, then sue or they could do nothing. Feeling froggy? Leap.
Your parents are responsible for you debts.

What else would happen after I pay the $250? Is anything going to be on my record? It's been clean until now. Police were not involved, but they took my id. They said I cooperated and I will just get a fee since I'm young and it's my warning.

Usually if you pay the civil fine immediately, aside from being banned from the store, you never hear from them again. You paid your portion of the theft enforcement overhead and they are happy.

Will anything be on my record? Or only the national database?

Is there any chance of me having the police come to my house, getting arrested, or getting jail time? Is it going to show on my record when jobs want to search me up?

    dang kid, just relax.

There are no guarantees you won't be prosecuted even if you pay the civil demand but given the fact they did not initially call the police I suspect if you pay the civil demand that will be the end of it. You will not be listed in any national database other than Target's own database. There will be no criminal record if you are never charged with a crime.

Do understand what the trespassing notice means though. It could be banning you from only that particular store or it could ban you from all Target stores in the world. Read it to see what it says. Respect it or risk being arrested and charged for trespass.
