Getting Emancipated While Living With a Grandparent
I Am 17 Years Old and I Want to Be Emancipated
For a long time, I have considered being emancipated. I live with my grandmother and she bullies me. She will sometimes physically abuse me but she mainly mentally abuses me. My grandmother makes fun of my depression and makes me feel worthless. She would call me a slut just because I have a boyfriend. I have lived with her for 5 years. She told me that she is going to kick me out when I am 18 and she also said that she is not going to help pay for my college.
I currently have a job and I have contacted a person who will give me a cheap price on rent. I have a high GPA in high school. I also have multiple adults who support me in emancipation.
My only concern is that I do not have enough evidence to go to court with.
Am I able to be emancipated?
Re: I Am 17 Years Old and I Want to Be Emancipated
You omitted to list your state and since state law governs where emancipating a minor is concerned, we can't say whether your state even allows for a minor to be emancipated or not. However, abuse is not a valid reason to emancipate a minor; nor is being called names. She may legally kick you out when you are 18 in most states and she is not obligated to help pay for your college in any state.
Does your job pay you enough to pay 100% of what it costs to support you? If not, you cannot be emancipated no matter what your state.
