    School Teacher Caught Shoplifting
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Georgia
I was accused of Shoplifting in Walmart. I was arrested and I was booked at the jail. I have never been in trouble before and I am a teacher. I am scared! I have a court date but, I can not afford an attorney. What Can I expect in court?

Shoplifting property with a total combined value of $300 or less is a Misdemeanor with a penalty of up to $1,000 in fines and up to one year in jail.

Shoplifting property with a total combined value of more than $300 is a Felony with a penalty that leaves the fines to the courts discretion and between one and ten years in prison.

You can also and most likely be sued by Walmart in a civil court. Most of the time Walmarts attorneys will send you a civil demand to avoid court.

I would expect to be let go from your job if they hear about it. You are supposed to be a role model. Let me rephrase, a good role model. teaching them stealing is okay, is not the kind of teachers they want.
