Financial Aid For Divorce in Connecticut
Our daughter has been married almost 7 years to this loser. He got fired from his job as a radio DJ almost 3 years ago after being written up for 'misconduct' several times and has refused to look for any job since. He keeps waiting for ESPN to call and discover him.
Our daughter has a HS diploma but found a part time job that led to a full time position that requires a bit of travel. She is now earning $48,000 a year plus expenses, while hubby lies on the bed playing PS2, or looking at questionable web sites on the computer, locking his 2 daughters into their t.v. room with a bag of cubed cheese, water bottles and the t.v.
He's cheated. He's left out love letters from teen girls he met through the radio station. He's taken money out of their account while daughter was out of town to entertain women at Sport's Bars. He's filled in the check book showing he'd paid her car note, insurance and 2 work cell phone bills. Here she is on the road and discovers all those checks were either faked to cover his spending or were bad checks. She's out of state with no car insurance and no work cells and had to stop and buy a pay and go cell. She couldn't get a hotel room and had to sleep in her car, washing off in a gas station!
After her last trip he accused her of cheating because she owns one pair of black underwear. His mother had given her a $50. gift certificate to Victoria Secret and our daughter bought panties in different colors because she's so tiny, nothing else would fit. He screamed and accused in front of their daughters, calling her horrible names.
He would sleep with the six year old and 3 year old in a full sized bed tho he weighs over 400 lbs. He'd 'buy groceries' for when daughter is away and she'd come home 3 days later and the children had eaten only McDonald's or pizza because there is no food in the house. Not enough milk for a cup of coffee!
She's thrown him out as of Saturday. Every bill except the water bill is in her name. She's opened her own bank account and he's screaming he'll demand alimony and try to take her daughters.
Here's the main problem. She's in Wallingford/ Meriden, Connecticut and hubby has taken so much out of her account that she couldn't put down $50.00 for a retainer. His family is well to do.
Are there any organizations that help women financially with divorce after such incidents?
Her Dad and I are unable to help financially, but if they moved near us, would open our home for them to live, and keep the girls at no charge.
Re: Daughter/ single mom/ divorce in Connecticut
She makes a sufficient income that she should be able to support herself after the divorce is complete, so I doubt she would qualify for public assistance.
Re: Daughter/ single mom/ divorce in Connecticut
What I noticed:
She CHOSE out of her own free will, to stay with that loser, even though he mistreated their children.
Teenage girls wrote love letters all of the time. Does that mean that all the today's stars are sleeping with those teenagers?

This makes no sense. No store besides Victor's Secret sells small size underwear??? are you KIDDING me?
No organization is going to help her when she makes $48k/year.

No. You misread. She bought ONLY panties in different colors because she's too tiny and conservative for the 'other things' they sell. She's 5' and about 90 lbs. His MOTHER chose where the gift card was from, not our daughter. It was that or lose the $50.00. She had NO desire or need for nasty outfits.

Understood, but she has no 'downpayment' for divorce proceedings. That was the 'aid' of which I spoke. Possibly a women's group???
Re: Daughter/ single mom/ divorce in Connecticut
Possibly a family member. Also, she has sufficient income that she should be able to get a small personal loan, or a credit card which offers cash advances.
She may be able to find a lawyer who will represent her without a retainer, perhaps on the basis of a lien against the marital home.
Re: Financial Aid For Divorce in Connecticut
After the divorce, she will have custody of the kids, no debt ( husband will get it ), and will be receiving hundred$ of dollars every month for child support.
Find a way to get her a lawyer. Unless many assets are involved, this should be a fairly simple divorce. $3,000 ish should cover everything.
Re: Financial Aid For Divorce in Connecticut
Dad2, there is no marital home and the only assets are the husbands massive Baseball card collection and some rare 'dolls' of baseball players from the 1970's. There's one leased car and one used car with a co-signer.
Her 'hubby' waited 5 years to admit to $65,000 in credit card debt pre marriage with minimum payments being paid for by his mother with bills sent to her home. When the mother in law retired, she sent the bills to our daughter. They filed bankruptcy and it was finished a few months ago.
Our daughter wants nothing from this fella. Not even child support and since he won't look for a job outside of radio, he couldn't pay anyhow. Son in law's family is very well to do. If he would file, ......
