Cable Company Employee Stole From Our Home
My question involves a consumer law issue in the State of: Georgia
I am beyond anger. The man the cable company sent to install service at our home, took a crossbow and accessories. He posted it for sale on Craigslist that same day and was subsequently arrested. Now after 9 months of delays, the DA reports that he will be pleading guilty in state court next Tuesday.
While going through the legal process, I found that the cable guy is a convicted felon on probation. He was recently released from prison after serving 3 years of a 20 year sentence for aggravated assault and robbery. (There had also been other incarcerations but they were shorter and not for felonies).
When I called the cable company to report the incident, I spoke with a regional office supervisor who told me that the installer was an employee of one of their subcontractors and that he would pass on the information. When I pressed him for what they were going to do about this, he told me that it was an internal company problem and they would "take care of it". When I asked him to explain, he pretty much hung up on me. I then "uninstalled" all of their equipment and took it back to our local cable office. I also spoke with a supervisor of the subcontractor who told me the guy had gone through a background check.
My question is (now that the installer is pleading guilty of the theft), do I have cause to go after the cable company and their subcontractor) for sending a convicted felon into my home? I am not a litigious person but this guy stole a deadly weapon. This crossbow can kill a bear. We keep all of our guns locked up but the crossbow will not fit in the gun safe so we store it on a high shelf out of sight (or so we thought).
Re: Cable Company Employee Stole From Our Home
You are not entitled to know what action they take. He was quite right that it was an internal matter.
Re: Cable Company Employee Stole From Our Home
True but I guess what I meant to convey was the cable company's flippant attitude and non-concern when I was reporting the incident to them. They sent a convicted felon on probation into my home.

There are actually laws in place protecting the rights of the convicted when it comes to discrimination and/or disparate treatment.
There are exceptions, of course (it's safe to say "no" to a convicted child molester who has just applied at a daycare center), but you might just be surprised if you read up a bit.

Wait a second - he only served 3 years of a 20 year term? How did that happen?!

He took some classes and promised to be good.

The employer of the felon had run a background check on this guy and it showed no criminal history. Somehow he fell through the cracks. The employer had done there job, what do you expect to get from them?

Ok, you're mad. Everybody gets that but really, what are you expecting anybody to do here? The guy got caught. That's all you are due. The company's involved are not obligated to give a damn and they are not obligated to apologize or offer you something as compensation. They just aren't so now, what are you wanting? This just is not a "legal" issue.
Re: Cable Company Employee Stole From Our Home
Ok. Based on the answers here, I guess I am wrong when I thought that a utility company would be responsible for anyone they send to your home. Sorry for putting this out there.
Re: Cable Company Employee Stole From Our Home
They could be and in your case they even might be....if you had any damages. So, what are your damages? Did you get the stolen items back or were they recovered and being held by the police or prosecutor?
at most that is what an employer might be liable for; your actual damages so what are they?
Re: Cable Company Employee Stole From Our Home
At least as posted this bad apple was not a cable company employee...and that the cable firm has the bad judgement to use sub contractors who do not do an accurate background check then it sure makes sense to vote with your feet as you and not use this service provider....
