If he is appointed an attorney for court purposes, that doesn't mean you and the attorney will agree on what is in his best interest. If you have to go to court and can prove you can't afford an attorney, they can appoint you one. Your attorney and Ethan's won't be the same and they may not have the same objective. You get what you pay for and when you can't pay for an attorney you don't get much.

I found a volunteer service and heart of florida legal aid and both said they could not help us.

I'm thinking more along the lines of there being a local Law School; they very often have "clinics", where law students will work on pro bono cases supervised by an attorney or five.

You have to keep looking in not-so-obvious places. Trust me - not only has Florida got one of the most user-friendly pro-se websites and walk-ins, they have a whole boatload of volunteer and pro-bono agencies who may be able to help.
