When Are Permanent Residents Eligible for Subsidies Under the Affordable Care Act
How are premium subsidies and penalties with regard to the Affordable Care Act affected by immigration status? I guess my question is, at what point in the process are you required to get insurance and eligible for subsidies? Would it be after you get your temporary green card and ssn? Or after the entire process is completed? The application was as a spouse of a US citizen.

    Read this.

What do you mean by "temporary green card"? Do you mean to refer to a conditional green card?

I did previously read what is in your link (I tried googling this earlier). I am not sure of the technical terms.

I don't understand the process that well and don't know the legal terms. As I understand it, there are 3 different "parts". You get a green card and SSN 3 months after applying (if things look okay). You get something after completing the interview process successfully. Then, after being married a set amount of time, you get something permanent.

I have health insurance but am wondering when my spouse needs to get insurance to be compliant with the law. We file our tax returns together.

A permanent resident with a conditional green card is a permanent resident.

If you have insurance through your employer, that is generally the best choice for a spouse or child. There are benefits to family coverage.

I am self employed, so I buy my own coverage. I will be switching it to family plan though after my spouse gets a ssn.

I hope you are able to participate in a group with other entrepreneurs so as to get a better rate. I am always concerned about the individual/family deductibles which become an issue with children added to the plan.

Have you spoken with your current carrier to see what they can offer you? I found ours helpful when looking to transfer plans from a COBRA to an individual.
