Friend Attempted to Shoplift but Was Released Without Charges, Could I Be Charged
My question involves criminal law for the state of: I was with a friend who was trying to steal an item worth $70. I, on the other hand, was going to buy an item myself and not steal it. My friend was on his way out and then and undercover target employee stops my friend. By the time the undercover officer had stopped my friend I was walking away from him. The officer told my friend to give her the items and she said that he will let my friend off. The officer calls me out and says to give the item back. I say that I am going to pay for my item and the officer says ok. My friend proceeds to walk out the store without being charged and I proceeded to the cashier. I pay for my item and I used my debit card to pay for it. So I was wondering if I am going to get charged with anything because they now have my debit card info with everything on it and I was with him when he tried stealing an item? So will anything come in my mail? FYI: My friend is 17 and I am 16.

I don't think you have anything to worry about. But FYI, you can be arrested for just being with someone that shoplifts Choose your friends wisely and if they want shoplift, then let them do it without you.

Which is it? Were you not stealing from the very beginning or were you walking out the door and being stopped with an item on you and then you said "No, I want to pay for it?" Those two statements contradict each other.

No, based on what you describe, I don't think you are going to be charged. COULD you be? Sure.

    Make better choices.

I was going to buy it in the first place as I was walking towards the cashier but I wasn't even close to the exit yet. She thought I was going to steal also so she stopped me but I told her I was actually going to pay for it and she let me off. I never concealed the item.
