Emancipation of Minors in Washington State
Hi. I am 16 years old and am currently starting the process of getting emancipated. I cant live with my mom anymore. she kicked me out twice and then reported me as a runaway. I suffer from verbal and financial abuse daily. I have diagnosed anxiety and depression and my mother says things like that's why your not normal or why cant you be normal. I have a job but I never see any of the money. as soon as I deposit my check into my bank account my mother moves it to a separate one that i do not have access to and she continuously threatens to make me quit my job. I am still living with my mom but I have a place to stay after I get emancipated. Mainly I just want to know if a. is it legal for my mom to take my money? and make me quit my job? b. is there a possibilty that my emancipation wont go through? if so what other options do i have? Thanks a bunch!
Re: Odds of Getting Emancipated
Doesn't sound like you are an eligible candidate for emancipation. You've got a psychiatric diagnosis, and you thinking Mom is 'abusing' you is not a reason that the State will emancipate a minor.
Mom owns everything until you are at age of majority, including your paycheck.
Re: Odds of Getting Emancipated
If you live in King or Pierce County, and you're ALREADY living away from your parents, and you're fully capable of supporting yourself, you have perhaps a 3% chance.
If you live outside of those two counties, it drops to around 1%.
It ain't happening, kiddo.
Re: Odds of Getting Emancipated
is it legal for my mom to take my money? Yes.
and make me quit my job? Yes
is there a possibilty that my emancipation wont go through? There is more than a possibility that your emancipation won't go through. It is a GIVEN that your emancipation won't go through.
if so what other options do i have? To live where your mother says you live until you turn 18 and not a minute earlier.
Thanks a bunch! You're welcome
Re: Odds of Getting Emancipated
Im curious as to why I don't have any chance of the emancipation going through. My mom doesnt want me to live with her the only reason that i still am is because she is legally responsible for me. We both want this so that she doesnt
Re: Odds of Getting Emancipated
The courts decide what is in your best interests. It is your mothers responsibility to provide for you until you're 18, she doesn't have to like it or agree with it, she just have to do it. You have to have more than just you and your mother wanting you to be Emancipated in order for a court to Emancipate you.
Re: Odds of Getting Emancipated
Just curious....If you don't SEE any of the money you're working for, then why are you working?
Re: Odds of Getting Emancipated
My mom told me today that if the emancipation doesnt go throught that she is going to put me in a girls home because she isnt going to let me stay with her. SO even if she is my mother and is supposed to take care of me she is not going. She kicked my brother out and hes not emancipated nor is he 18 he is currently couch hopping because he dopesnt even have a job.

I enjoy working it make me feel responsible and I al;so hope that maybe when i turn 18 or my emancipation goes through I will get my money back.
Re: Odds of Getting Emancipated
You won't be emancipated, and no matter how unfair it is, your earnings belong to your parent/s.
Re: Odds of Getting Emancipated
If your mother puts you in a girls home, she will have to be responsible for your care while you're there. The girls home also probably won't allow you to continue to work.
