Caught Shoplifting and Confessed to the Offense
My question involves criminal law for the state of: California
Hi, I just got caught today shoplifting at walmart for around $60 worth of items. This is my first time actually shoplifting and my first offense and I don't know what to expect. Honestly, I don't know what came over me and I shouldn't have done it and now I'm paying the price for it. It doesn't help that my mental state isn't well as I'm going through some depression problems. Basically Walmart security called me to their room and told me if I know what I had done and I truthfully told them I shoplifted. I don't think I was in the right state of mind at that time seeing as I had no intention in the beginning to shoplift. They took my id and since this was first offense they said I can come back and they took picture for Walmart reference. Then they called cops and gave me a ticket for civil court. Overall I'm really scared and confused what to do and what to expect. I'm terrified and I can't tell my parents or else I'll get disowned.

I meant to put what should I do in this situation. It's my first offense and I'm honestly scared and confused on what to do. Should I get a lawyer? I can't really afford one seeing as I'm a college student

Read the stickied threads. Look for possible dispositions that will allow you to minimize the resulting record, preferably allowing you to avoid a conviction.
If you're an adult, you don't have to tell your parents although nobody can promise that they won't find out; if you're going to juvenile court, expect that your parents will find out.

Thanks I will try. Honestly this had made me a nervous wreck and I haven't been getting any sleep at all :/ The date of my civil court is in 2 months which is long ways off and I don't know what it's so far off
