Possible Participation in Return Fraud
My question involves criminal law for the state of: NEW YORK (NEW YORK CITY to be exact)
The situation is basically this, I was purchasing something from a nike store and two maybe around the age of 15 approached me and asked me if I could help them out, they were trying to return a gift but was having a hard time because they didn't have a state ID, the cashier stated that she could take anyone's state ID so I decided to help and provided my ID to the cashier so the return could be made. I did not think nothing of it until the very next day it occurred to me that what if the items were in fact stolen? I feel like a fool and I know that I am responsible if that is the case.
My question is, can I and will I be arrested for this?
should I make a police report before anything does actually happen?
or should I wait to see if it is actually even stolen?
I'm not sure what to do and I would be devastated if I have to go to jail for something like this.
I could be just paranoid from over thinking but I rather be safe than sorry.
Re: Getting Involved in Fraud Without Realizing
Noel, If your story is true, I would do nothing until there is a need to tell your story. Don't let your paranoia screw with your head. You will know if something comes of this good deed. I would do the same thing at this point if your story is not true.
Next time, strap yourself well on the turnip truck. :friendly_wink:
