How Much Do Civil Demands Usually Cost
My question involves criminal law for the state of: new york
My friend got caught stealing at walmart or target (i don't know.honestly don't remember which one she said because they both are the same to me ) a while ago. They didnt call the police of take her pic. she can shop at the store still and said theyd send her something in the mail which i'm assuming is a civil demand. how much would it cost if she took about $90-100 worth of stuff? How much time would they give her to pay it off?

Per statute,
Quote:
Quoting NY General Obligations Law, Sec. 11-105(5). Larceny in mercantile establishments.
An adult or emancipated minor who commits larceny against the property of a mercantile establishment shall be civilly liable to the operator of such establishment in an amount consisting of:
- the retail price of the merchandise if not recovered in merchantable condition up to an amount not to exceed fifteen hundred dollars; plus
- a penalty not to exceed the greater of five times the retail price of the merchandise or seventy-five dollars; provided, however, that in no event shall such penalty exceed five hundred dollars.
