Does Inadequate Home Schooling Constitute Child Neglect
My question involves child abuse or neglect in the State of: New York
    Hello everyone!
I'm a sixteen year old girl and currently living with my mother and grandparents. I don't know how to phrase my words but this is the gist of it: I haven't been properly schooled in about five years, neither have my siblings, my mother won't enroll us in school because she wants to homeschool us which she's said for the past five years but never finished what she starts and doesn't have the time being a single parent now.

Also, I haven't actually been diagnosed with depression but I was once molested by a family member and she just brushed it off basically when I told her. I've been going through a lot of trouble with myself and I want/need help, and she knows I'm depressed but hasn't shown any concern whatsoever.

I just need an answer about my situation and what I should do. I don't want to be stuck in the middle of nowhere for the rest of my life. And I have six younger siblings, four of which live with me and are being neglected too.

Is your father in the picture?

You must be getting some education, even if its just on your own, because your writing skills are pretty good for a 16 year old. I have seen quite a few teens who have always gone to regular school and cannot articulate things as well as you do.

However, Dogmatique's question is important and really needs to be answered before much, if any, advice can be given.

Yes, I actually did teach myself most of the things I know, and no, my father isn't really in the picture. He has another wife, no job, two kids, and was never really there even when he was married to my mother.

If that's the case, it appears that there is no educational neglect going on.

Ok, thanks a lot for the help, I'm actually really relieved.

Would your mom be willing to let you get your GED? You're going to need some kind of diploma if you plan to eventually go to college.

16 year olds can take the GED test in NY.

Here is my concern outside of your original question.

If you were molested by a family member, is that family member in the home or in such a position of trust that would place you and/or your siblings at risk. If so I would advise you contact someone at Child Protective Services and speak with them.
