Re: Can a Security Guard Physically Restrain a Minor for Shoplifting
I have been in full uniform when I contacted people and then had them claim on the stand that they did not know who I was! One woman was told by an officer in a clearly marked "Police" polo shirt to stop, she yelled at him, called him a pig and then turned to run and ran right into me - in full uniform where she proceeded to swing on me, pull away, yell "Why are you arresting me?" and then when I took her to the ground she bit my hand hard enough to draw blood. In both a written apology letter and in court she said she did not recognize us!

I believe it.
Ever since being caught, I do anything I can to prevent any issue from potentially arising. The hardest is that I do have atleast 2 lipsticks in my purse, cheap stuff for when working, the good stuff for job interviews or going to a restaurant. Those reusable bags in the stores, initialed with a sharpie (when I remember to use the bags). Have a return, I just walk right up to the greeter with it so they know I have it, even if they don't place a sticker on it. If I need to dig out a pen from my purse to check things off a list, I make sure to do it in an open and obvious area, and preferably in front of an employee.
And yeah...working as a cashier.....I saw a few "nice tries". I had a customer....4 bath towels, 4 hand towels, 4 wash clothes. She was bitching at me "Can't I just scan one and hit that there are 4 of each". Sorry, I have to scan each one. Sure enough....she had 1 cheap one on the bottom, 1 on top....and 2 expensive ones buried in the middle. Of each stack. "Oh, I thought they were all the same". "Which ones do you want, maam?" (of course, the cheap ones).
We also had to open a shoe box and make sure the shoes matched the box description, and the sizes were the same, and throw away the paper from the box. I did this and found a kids t-shirt under the paper. "Do you wish to purchase this, ma'am". "Oh, I forgot I put that in there!". (she told me she had so much to carry...a shoe box and a t-shirt?)
Another time, retail clerk...."These chips are bad, you might want to take them to the backroom". Those chips were so bad that her kid was mowing down on them!
Re: Can a Security Guard Physically Restrain a Minor for Shoplifting
I always take the time to offer my receipt to even Walmart greeters because my hands do not function well so I cannot button/zip pants or shirts and go around looking like I came off skid row. They appreciate a nice person. It paid off recently, I picked up 2 site to stores and watched the girl scan them, signed the papers, she stickered the items and I left showing my computer receipts. Turns out the second item was rejected by the computer. When I called in after discovering it via email, instead of running it through as picked up, they refunded it as not picked up. I ended up calling customer service online to get the issue straightened out. They had to email corp finance who emailed me a new statement with the charge going to my card again.
