Can an Employee Get in Trouble for an Employer's Embezzlement
My question involves criminal law for the state of: New Jersey
I work for an accountant who took over $50,000 from a client's account (multiple transfers over last 18 months) and transferred into his business & personal accounts. Then he made entries to cover it all up. I am sick about this. I am planning on submitting my resignation in the next few weeks, but can I get in trouble for not telling on him? If I did tell on him, how would I ever get another job in my field?

Why would reputable employers refuse to hire you because you ratted out a criminal? Are all the employers in your field criminals themselves?
And yes, you can get into trouble for not reporting it the minute you found out about it. I recommend you get an attorney right away.

Credibility is very big in such circles. Failing to report what you should have known is career suicide.

Can anyone recommend an attorney in Union county NJ?

More importantly I have to ask, in your capacity as a subordinate did you knowingly do anything that aided or facilitated your boss in his commission of the embezzlement?

Absolutely not!
Did you unknowingly do anything? If you did, that makes it even more important that you report this. However, the bottom line is that you know that the guy did this...and its VERY serious. When it comes out, and it WILL come out, you are going to be tainted by association and maybe even criminally liable by association if you do not report this.
